My oldest daughter now age 14 is angry with me that I waited this long and tried so many 'things' to save our marriage, that I should have left when she was 7. Her youngest sister was an infant and wouldn't have "known" anything and my middle daughter wouldn't be using the phrase "I'm sorry" all the time and depressed. When she was 7 she recognized that our family life was wrong and she did not like the treatment of her father not only to herself but to me and she didn't know the 1/2 of it. Her 7th birthday wish was that "Mommy wouldn't cry anymore." The abuse was emotional. The things that were physically hurt were walls, counters and cabinets. That's what she saw, what happened behind closed doors to me was that 'No' wasn't an option. To say that these kids are better off living in that environment I disagree and frankly received that from the subject matter, my daughter, who not only told me, but my parents as well. However, I certainly am not saying separating is easier. With me not being there as a form of protection they are afraid. We all have emotional battles and scares to overcome and are in therapy. I think the case study is lacking the why's and what for's. To say they are better off? Absolutely Not!
